Transitions can be amazingly satisfying or remarkably murky to navigate. As we build our coaching practice, my wife and I oscillate through a range of experiences and emotions.
There are times we feel like soaring eagles… with beautiful vistas as far as the eye can see. Our calendars are comfortably full with client engagements. The challenge comes during the in-between periods when there is a lull in our work. If not checked, these depressed moments can easily unravel our plans.
For me, these moments can easily become a catalyst to lethargy. It is also when negative thoughts attack my mind like a hurricane. Thoughts that leave me feeling tired and disoriented. I tend to become withdrawn.
Our saving grace has been an unchanging question: “Am I on mission?” The first part of our mission focuses on co-creating with others their desired reality. To answer this question, I am forced to introspect on how I can give to make someone else’s lot better.
Having a clear mission to live for has kept us going even through the darkest moments.
If our lives are to be transformed, our minds must welcome the transformative force.
It is not enough to take steps which may some day lead to a goal; each step must be itself a goal and a step likewise.” ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
What then does our mission keep reminding us of?
- Clarify priorities that serve as clear markers along our growth journey.
- Get rid of distractions and grow from our current reality.
- Focus on outcomes oriented towards service.
These reminders keep us going forward one step at a time. We are able to navigate the mental conflict when our reality does not match our desired space.
