In our ‘rush’ to live, an effort to pause and reflect goes out of the window. In our breathless existence, we often miss out on our essence of being human.
I did not feel like being anywhere near my bike that day. My legs felt stiff and a lethargic haze hang over me. Then, a small voice, from deep within said, “Just go, even if for a short ride. You will still chip away at your weekly goal.”
Dragging myself out of my laggard reverie, I hit the road. Without the pressure of a specific turning point in mind, I began to enjoy every other pedal stroke. About 20km (12 miles) in, I spotted another cyclist heading in the same general direction. After a quick salutation, he enquired where I was headed to. Let’s just say my route shifted quite significantly!
This wasn’t a timed race or metered ride. My goal was to celebrate. The previous day my wife had just ascended Mt. Kenya’s Point Lenana and my 15-year old Son had chosen to be baptised.
“Why not just have a chat with this guy as we go up this climb?” I mused to myself. And chat we did for the next 6 hours! Enzo, my newfound friend, and I had so much in common. We are both coaches, have a deep desire to work with people and an unshakable shared faith.
A single bracelet does not jingle.” – African proverb
Our ride became a partnership. In the process, I made an unplanned conquest… a 138km ride with a 2,038m elevation gain!
But beyond that, I gained a new friend, fresh experiences and valuable insights. My cup was much fuller. In addition to the physical conquest, I was mentally stimulated and spiritually nourished.
This ride reminded me of why I deeply treasure my passion as a coach. Coaching is a partnership invested in the well- being of people. My clients are my team members. We engage not to transact, but to co-create.
In the process, my clients are able to dig deep into their potential. The insights and action that come to the fore from this partnership are unstoppable! Are they easy? Rarely. Are they transformational? Without a doubt, yes!
I wonder how different the world would be if we connected more rather than compete against each other. Each of us brings value to the table. The collective of these values, when consciously harnessed, is unstoppable. To be a leader that matters, take time to connect. You will surprise yourself!
