I contemplated on this during a conversation with myself on the day the International Coaching Week 2021 kicked off. With a deep focus on supporting my coaching clients, it can be easy to forget that coaching works for me too!
Cycling has become my channel to care for my mental, spiritual and physical health. Occasionally, my body becomes ‘non-compliant’ as lethargy births lame excuses of how I can ride another day. It does not take much to slide back into my lowest form. A place where laziness wafts in like the cold fingers of a cold night; where I just exist.
“How will you account for lagging behind on your cycling distance goal?” I asked myself. At the beginning of the year, I set a clear goal of how many kilometers I would cycle. I shared this with my family and cycling buddies. Yet here I was making flippant excuses about feeling tired.
Besides being accountable, it was clear I was violating my potential and ability. That self-coaching question forced me to immediately don my cycling kit, hop onto my bike and hit the road. Slightly over two hours later, I was back home happy and rejuvenated. Not only was I feeling proud of myself, I had experienced a mental re-set. Some issues that were bothering me seemed to have ‘magically’ melted away as the ride calmed the clatter in my mind.
If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.” ~Robert Fritz
You don’t need permission from anyone to decide what you must do. The key is in your hands. And it is okay to let go of your fears. Give yourself permission to ask yourself tough, honest questions. Then take action on the plan you come up with.
It is absurd that a man should rule others, who cannot rule himself.” ~Latin Proverb
Q: What excuses must you overcome to transform your potential into action? You can leave a comment by clicking here.
The excuse of I can do this tomorrow – we have heard about tomorrow never coming, well we must realise that tomorrow is also not real, the only moment that is real is the present.
To be present is key Aleema! Thank you for your thoughts.
